About the Optometry Technician Course
Optometry is a healthcare profession which is concerned with the health of the eyes especially related to refractory errors and their corrections, using lenses and other optical aids. The course is designed to educate students about the different concepts of eye-health, diseases, diagnosis and treatment. The objective of the course is to produce trained ophthalmic professionals who can render eye care to more and more people who need it.
During the optometry technician course the students are trained to inspect, detect and advise treatments for various ocular ailments. They also learn the skills of designing and manufacturing of spectacle lenses, contact lenses and low vision devices.
- To be able to record vision with accuracy and assess error of refraction using retinoscopy and subjective refraction
- To learn the use of common instruments and equipment related to ophthalmology
- To be able to perform procedures like tonometry, syringing, fundus photo, slit lamp examination, ophthalmoscopy, corneal staining, removal and dressing of the eye
- To be able to advise and prescribe spectacles and low vision aids
- To assist common ophthalmic surgeries
Major topics covered during the two years training program are clinical optometry, ocular pharmacology, contact lens fitting, ocular pathology, assessment and management of binocular vison, contact lens care and complications and clinical methodology.
Students are introduced to general anatomy, physiology (cytology), histology and osteology in the first year of their studies. Further they also learn about the relevant pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and ocular pharmacology. Detailed ocular anatomy and physiology is also a part of the syllabus along with basic physics related to light and physiological optics.Hand hygiene and prevention of cross infection, basic life support (BLS) & cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is also a part of the diploma training.
The second year of studies comprises of the study of diseases related to the eye, mechanical optics and lenses, lenses prescription, instruments & equipment used in the eye and community ophthalmology and drugs used in optometry. Nursing procedures such as recording the vitals, oxygen therapy, nebulization and IV infusion are also taught.
